In this tutorial, you will learn how to create an amazing futuristic photo manipulation and you will learn how to turn a simple portrait into an amazing images of a futuristic stranger and unusual atmosphere. You will create something new in this genre and learn many useful techniques.
In this tutorial will be described in four stages of creation. The first stage is to create the background and the addition of the model. The second stage is the creation of mechanical arms and work on their realism. In the last two stages, we will work on the effects and color correction of the image. You need electricity (in principle, it is important :)), a little perseverance and patience. A modicum of attention and spark of inspiration and good mood, any version of Photoshop.
- Background – Jinz-stock
- Model – Mo-01
- Apple – JoBusty
- PNG leafs – Meyiing
- Trails brush set – MariaSemelevich
- Mechanical parts – MariaSemelevich
First you need to turn on your computer and open the browser with this tutorial :), then open Photoshop. Create a new document. Go to File > New or the short key Cmd /Ctrl+ N. A blank document with size of 2000 pixels wide and 3000 pixels high, resolution 200 Pixels/Inch. I named the document “Cyber- Eve”.
The first thing we will work on the background. This photo interesting and unusual content, so it was perfectly fine to me. Put image on the working document. Go to File > Place (Place Embedded) and select the image “MAM_ceiling_3_by_Jinz_stock”.
First you need to properly locate it. Use the Free Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd+ T or Edit > Free Transform) to resize the layer like shown in the image below. Try to have a black stripe on the image has been shifted slightly to the right from the center.
Now we need to slightly reduce the noise in the image and make parts smoother. So they will look better in the general atmosphere. Firs convert this layer for Smart Filters (Filter > Convert for Smart Filters). Then go to Filter > Noise > Reduce Noise… Set the settings like shown in the image below.
Now sharpen the image. For this I used the filter “Sharpen” (Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen…). Do not worry if nothing happens and does not appear the settings window. As it should be. The main thing that this filter is displayed on the layer.
Now I add blur to the background to create depth of field. Since this layer is already contains Smart Filters that if we add a layer with blur, and then remove it with a part of the image, then the effects of the previous filters disappear. So, right-click on the layer and select from the list “Convert to Smart Object“.
Now add a blur filter. I used “Gaussian Blur” (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur…). Set the settings like shown in the images below.
Now you need to remove the blur from the foreground of image. Create a New layer (Layer > New > Layer or Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + N). Select Brush Tool (B) on Toolbar and set the settings Size: 500px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 70%, Flow: 100%. Set foreground color to Black (D then X). Select a smart filters mask.
Remove blur from middle of left side and a little less (change Opacity to 50%) from right side of image.
Image is too dark for my purposes, and not in the tonality, so using adjustment layers I changed it. Add to this layer adjustment layer “Curves” (Layer > New Adjustment layer > Curves… or click on black and white circle on a Layer panel and in list, select “Curves…”) to align the tone and add a brightness to image. Set the settings like shown in the image below.
Add next adjustment layer “Selective Color” This adjustment layer will help remove excess Greens and Cyan colors. You can also lighten up a little white and mid-tones. Set the settings like shown in the images below.
Now we need to do a preform for the future. We will create a small colored spot in the middle of the image. Shadow from opposite side of the building very noticeable. Use Gradient Tool (G) and set following settings Form: Foreground to Transparent, Method: Radial, Opacity: 40%, Color: # 2793a1.
Make a small spot on the shadow like shown in the image below. This will help us in the future to make the background more inconspicuous.
Now add a model to our work. Go to File > Place (Place Embedded) and select the image “Stock_Model_61_by_Mo_01”. Use the Free Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd+ T or Edit > Free Transform) to resize the layer like shown in the image below.
Use the Quick Selection Tool (W) and select the background. Be careful, because some parts of the clothes may be added to the selection. Inverse selection (Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift+ I or Select > Inverse).
Now go to Refine Edge in the top panel of the tool’s properties (Option/Alt+ Cmd/Ctrl+ R or Select > Refine Edge). Set View Mode to “On Black” so we can see the remains of a light background. Set a check on “Smart Radius” and set Radius: 1.7px. Take a Brush in this window and draw it on a model hair. It remove background from hair. Click Ok to apply changes.
Add to layer with model a layer mask (Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection or click icon on Layer Panel).
Proceed to draw light and shadow on the model. Create a New layer (Layer > New > Layer or Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift+ N) with such settings: Mode: Overlay, set check box on “Fill with Overlay-neutral color (50% gray)”. Set this layer as Clipping Mask (Option/Alt+ Ctrk+ G or Layer > Create Clipping Mask), it imposed effects will be applied to the lower layer (layer model).
Use the Burn Tool (O) for create shadow and Dodge Tool (O) to create a light. Set the settings to each tool like shown in the image below.
Draw light and shadow with the light based on light from the window and on top in the future. Do not do a contrasting shade too, otherwise they will be strongly emphasized. Blue shows where to draw the light, and red – the shade.
We proceed to the hands. This part takes a little patience and attention from you to properly position the parts of hands. Open resource “mechanical_parts_by_mariasemelevich-d7x76tf” (Cmd/Ctrl + O or File > Open).
Take a Lasso Tool (L) and select first in the form of bent arms. Use Move Tool (V) to move this part in working document. If you want work faster, then hold Cmd/Ctrl (when you use other tool) to switch to Move Tool (V). If you release the key, then return to the tool which you working.
Use the Free Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd+ T or Edit > Free Transform) to rotate the layer like shown in the image below.
Repeat Step 15 (starting with the second paragraph) with the other two parts of the hand. Arrange layers with hands parts so that the next layer was under the previous.
Now move the last hand and place this layer behind model layer that was part of a hand behind her head. Place this hand like shown in the image below.
Add the remaining element in the modernization of the model body. Select both fragment and moved to the working document. Place them as shown in the figure. Change the Blending mode to this layer on “Soft Light”.
That’s all. The last element you need only move to the right place. Now the picture looks strange, but now we’ll fix it.
That is the part of the tutorial, where you need attention :) Select the layer with the model. Take a Clone Stamp Tool (S), Option/Alt- click to define clone source point. Select places to clone from the back and sides of the model to fit on light and does not contain a pattern with shirts. If you see a warning like the second picture, press Ok.
Set the settings like shown in the image. Proceed to the cloning of clothing. Here is my result. Try to get something like that.
Now add the shadow of the hand on the clothes. To do this, create a new layer (Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + N without effects) above the layer with light and shadow. Make this layer as Clipping Mask (Option/Alt+ Ctrk+ G or Layer > Create Clipping Mask).
Take a Brush Tool (B) with the settings: Size: 250px, Opacity: 45% Hardness: 0%. Set color to Black (D). Draw the shadow like shown in the image below. Try not to do it excessively large and dark because the shadow is less than when the object is closer.
Now focus on the new hands of model. Need to add some effects to make them look realistic. First, combine the layers with three parts of the left hand in one group (Cmd/Ctrl+ G or Layer > Group Layers). Duplicate the group (Cmd/Ctrl+ J or Layer > Duplicate Layer) and merge it into one layer (Cmd/Ctrl+ E or Layer > Merge Group).
For the resulting layer set the Blending mode “Soft Light” and Opacity: 60%. To make it easier to work with, you can hide this layer by clicking the eye icon next.
Let us examine with all by turns. First, add a mask to a group. Take a Brush Tool (B) (Size: 200px, Hardness: 100%, Opacity: 100%) and on the group mask remove all of the shoulder to the sleeve t-shirts. Try to make the the contour precise to the skin was not visible.
Now that the shoulder is not present, you can turn on a layer with a hand and see that part of the show through a t-shirt. Take a Brush Tool (B) (Size: 200px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 50%) and remove the superfluous as shown in the figure.
It is important not to move this layer. If you have changed its position, then repeat Step 21 that this layer was same place where the original.
Now create a shadow of the T-shirts on the hand model. This operation will consist of two layers with different overlay shadow. Create a new layer (Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + N) above the group with hand. Make this layer as Clipping Mask (Option/Alt+ Ctrl + G). Take a Brush Tool (B) (Size: 175px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 100%, Color: Black). Draw a shadow as shown below.
Repeat the previous step (Brush Opacity: 50%), but set Opacity: 45% to this layer.
That’s it! Hands is ready. A little later we will impose the shadow for this atmosphere, but now we proceed to the apple. Go to File > Place (Place Embedded) ans select file “poison_apple_by_jobusty-d3nfy8z”. Use the Free Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd+T or Edit > Free Transform) to resize an apple.
Select background in apple using Magic Wand Tool (W), hold Shift to adding to selection other tones and select all background. Inverse selection (Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift+ I or Select > Inverse) and add a layer mask to this layer.
We inscribe an apple in her hand. So we do not interfere with the mask layer, convert this layer as Smart Object. Again, add a layer mask to this layer. Use hard brush to remove from fingers an apple. To make it easier to select the her hand (hold Cmd/Ctrl and click on layer) Remove apple from fingers and the remaining portions will have to clean up manually.
Add to apple leaves. You can arrange them as I have, or try your own version. I used image “xPNGGG7” in pack “png___leaf_16p_by_meyiing-d5bqg6o”, it looks more like an apple leaf, but you can try other kinds. Resize (Ctrl/Cmd+ T) and Duplicate the leaf (Cmd/Ctrl+ J). Position them like shown in the image below. I merged the two leafs in a single layer (Ctrl/Cmd+ E).
As I wrote earlier that it is necessary to put the right light and shadow. That these are going to do. Create a New layer (Layer > New > Layer or Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + N) with such settings: Mode: Overlay, set check box on “Fill with Overlay-neutral color (50% gray)”. This layer should be above all others. Set Opacity: 70%.
Now a little confusing scheme. The light should be applied to the hands and the apple, but not to change the background. In general I made like that. Select to the right hand of the model (which for face), (hold Cmd/Ctrl and click on layer). Subtract from selection a model (hold Cmd/Ctrl + Option/Alt and click on model layer mask). Add to selection left hand (hold Cmd/Ctrl + Shift and click on left hand layer (which we made shoulder)).
Use the Burn Tool (O) for create shadow and Dodge Tool (O) to create a light. Settings for instruments remain the same (Step 14). Try to draw as my result. Do not make the shadows are too hard, and the light is too bright. Otherwise, you will have much land and the contrast image will look ugly. To deselect go to Select > Deselect or Cmd/Ctrl + D.
Now add a little light on the fingers and apple. To give the effect of light from the window. I do not brightens apple on the previous layer, because then it will be overexposed, and we need to create a slight haze. Create a New layer (Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + N) and set Blending Mode “Soft Light” to this layer.
Select apple (hold Cmd/Ctrl and click on layer). Use a Brush Tool (B) (Size: 400px, Hardness 0%, Opacity: 30%) and draw on top of the apple a little light. Deselect (Cmd/Ctrl + D) and draw near the fingers of the model.
In this stage, work with the model and hand finished. Look at my result. The next steps is to add effects. I group all the layers of the model, hands and parts of the same group. So it will be easier to work with it (Ctrl+ G).
Remember that all subsequent layers should be over group with model. First, add lighting effects and light source on the roof. Create a New layer (Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + N). Fill it black color (D then X and use Cmd/Ctrl + Del). Convert this layer for Smart filters (Filter > Convert for Smart Filters) Add a filter “Lens Flare…” (Filter > Render > Lens Flare…).
To this layer set a Blending mode “Screen” and Opacity: 88%. Try to position lens flare just below the edge of the image, and between the two edges of the walls.
Now add a little blue to give the picture of airiness and lightness. Create a new layer (Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + N) under the previous layer. Take a Gradient Tool (G). Set settings like in image below and use color: # 06698f. Draw a gradient in the left part of the image, slightly lower than lens flare. Its end is to go beyond the image. It covers the image to the eighth frame of the window. Set Opacity: 65% and Blending Mode “Screen” to this layer.
Create a new layer (Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + N) below the gradient. Draw a small gradient in the bottom of the image. Instrument settings and color remained the same. Do not place a spot on the border of the image! Place it outside the document so that only the edge of the gradient stints on a picture. Set Opacity: 65% and Blending Mode “Color” to this layer.
Now add beautiful stripes of flying nano- hexagons that I made for you :) or just make the background using “Trails_brush_set_by_Maria_Semelevich” brushes. Load brushes in Photoshop. Create a new layer (Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + N) under a model group and set Opacity: 75%. You can use any brushes, what you liked. I used “Sampled Brush 41”. Set color # 40d6ed and draw it where you want.
Convert this layer for Smart filters and add Filter “Gaussian Blur” (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur…). Set the settings like shown in the images below. This will help make them not stand out more.
Need to remove a little blur from a brush layer to make the depth of field and the effect of the flight. Use soft brush (Size: 100px, Opacity: 40%,) and on filter mask remove parts of effect.
Add to these two styles “Inner Glow” and “Outer Glow” (Layer > Layer Style > Inner Glow…/Outer Glow…). Set the appropriate options for each style. These styles make for clear and glowing pattern brushes.
To change the color of the pattern, I added a new layer (Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + N) above it (as Clipping Mask (Option/Alt+ Ctrk+ G)) and used a soft brush painted the desired color (# f0ff37 and # 0ae53c). It’s completely creative process. So experiment with brushes and color.
Repeat steps 30-32 only over the group with the model that the fragments were falling on her face and hands. Remember that Opacity: 100% to layer with a brush, on a filter mask remove the blur from the face and hands of the model. To make work easier, create a new layer (Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + N) over the group with the model. Draw the desired texture, then convert for Smart Filters and duplicate filters and effects from a layer in the previous steps.
We proceed to the color correction. I decided to do a little more bright and whiten the color and underline them. I just used three adjustment layers. The first is “Color Balance” (Layer > New Adjustment layer > Color Balance… or click on icon on a Layer panel). Set for each tone their values. This layer removes excessive yellowing and gives the photo a blue tint. This layer have Opacity: 70%.
Next adjustment layer is “Color Lookup”. Set checkbox on a “3DLUT file” and select “Kodak 5205 Fuji 3510 (by Adobe).cube”. Set Opacity: 50% to this layer. This layer, I was able to achieve the desired effect, become saturated and vivid colors, and add a lot of white in the range of pictures. It seems that the details become clearer. This is what you need.
One last adjustment layer. This is again “Color Lookup”. Now select “Kodak 5218 Kodak 2383 (by Adobe).cube”. Set Opacity: 50% to this layer. This layer will show a blue tone and make them brighter. Even add a nice little yellow tint. This layer completes our work!
