Step 3

Once it’s done running, hide/show the layers in the Volume Deformation layer group to preview the results. If it’s not strong enough, the pro version has an action that will give you 5 levels of volume deformation. Or you can just play the Volume Deformation action again which is the free way of doing it.

Typically 2 levels is all you need. Once you start increasing it, the amount of curvature/fisheye effect starts to increase around the edges.

Step 4 (Optional)

After volume deformation, we can straighten the lines automatically by going to Filter > Camera Raw Filter. Go to the Lens Correction > Manual tab then click on the vertical upright button which will straighten the vertical lines in your photo.

Thank you for reading this tutorial. Volume Deformation is the best automatic method to fix perspective distortions. I do a lot of Real Estate Photography and frequently shoot with ultra wide angle rectilinear lens. My clients like how the lens can capture the entire scene but don’t like the perspective distortions it creates. Using volume deformation, I can reduce that distortion and balance out the effects.

Wow, this is very interesting. I take a lot of photos with a wide angle lens and have been trying to get rid of that distortion with different compositions. Now at least I know I can do it in photoshop if needed.

Have been doing it this way for about a year, definitely works better than PS ‘s adaptive. Even brought the retoucher actions just because of this one action.

Isn’t this what Adobe Photoshop Lightroom does at the click of a button?

Sorry for the confusion. Lightroom corrects Lens Distortion which is different. I added an image to better show what it does:

Sorry about the confusion. Lightroom only corrects Lens distortion which is different. Here’s an image to show what it does (notice the TV’s unnaturally wide shape in the before picture).
